Inspired by the landscape

Sarah is a landscape painter working from her home studio in Stamford, Lincolnshire.  She is self- taught, re-discovering art approximately 12 years ago after a rather dull career as a lawyer.  She now relishes the freedom of expression that creativity brings.

Sarah is inspired by rural landscapes, town allotments, gardens and floral subjects and makes colourful, uplifting paintings in acrylic and mixed media.  She has exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and shown work in several UK contemporary galleries.  She is a longstanding member of Welland Valley Art Society and has been newly elected to Leicester Society of Artists. Sarah regularly shows her work at Stamford Arts Centre and opens her studio to visitors as part of Northants and Rutland Open Studios.  She also teaches occasional workshops/demonstrations.

Sarah’s landscape paintings are not a literal interpretation of a view but rather an expression of her experience being in a location.  She aims to evoke a sense of place which she hopes will find a connection with the viewer.  She paints almost always in ‘mixed media’, which is often a combination of acrylic paints, pencil, charcoal, water soluble crayons and oil pastel.  She enjoys using expressive brushstrokes, scratches and drawn lines and has a real passion for colour.  She is particularly interested in how colour has an emotional impact on the viewer, and she uses simplified shapes and planes of colour to add intrigue and an abstracted quality which invites a closer look.

Paintings currently on show at the Welland Valley Art Society autumn exhibition from Monday 30 September to Saturday 19 October at Stamford Arts Centre.
